• New AI software-as-a-service (Saas) offering delivering end-to-end NRW reduction
  • Uses FIDO AI to unlock multiple verifiable outcomes via a smartphone app
  • Low-cost sensors double as fixed or mobile loggers, correlators, ground microphones and more

PRESS RELEASE

Oxford, UK, May 7 2025

A new smartphone app for water professionals has been launched today in a bid to drive down the cost and expand the reach of non-revenue water (NRW) technology around the world.

The FIDO Smart app gives engineers access to AI across the entire NRW value chain – from fixed network monitoring to mobile data logging, correlation, ground sounding and more – all using the same portable low-cost device.

FIDO Smart can also verify leak repairs, profile consumption and even be used to detect theft.

Low capex NRW reduction

Victoria Edwards, the CEO of FIDO Tech, the software company behind the technology, said FIDO Smart would vastly reduce the capital expenditure required by utilities for any aspect of active leak monitoring, detection and location, or even the complete end-to-end process.

FIDO Smart uses the power of volumetric FIDO AI to deliver multiple verified NRW outcomes using simple, low-cost sensors to gather data and a phone or PC app to surface the results instantaneously.

We believe this is the first end-to-end technological solution to NRW, which worldwide costs utilities an average of 30% of the water they transport. In an era of water stress and climate change, this is something no community or economy can afford, let alone the effect on the environment.

The app uses FIDO AI to analyse tiny nuances in acoustic and kinetic data in water pipeline networks to detect leaks and their size at speed and at scale.

Versatile low-cost sensors do it all

The concept is simple.

Because FIDO AI performs data analysis in the cloud, all it needs to deliver multiple functions is raw data. As a result, the sensor device itself can be as simple and low cost as possible.

The sensors need no charging or ongoing calibration and deploy magnetically. There’s no need for additional outlay on equipment like correlators or geo microphones. With FIDO AI any sensor can perform any function and they are so light and portable that a single technician can place around 40 on a water network in a morning.

Add-on telemetry for fixed network monitoring

A simple optional IoT telemetry device can also be deployed with sensors turning each one into fixed network monitors which deliver daily leak waypoints ranked by size for prioritised investigation.

Plus, because FIDO AI gathers and analyses 1,000s of files a second automatically, it reduces the speed of analysis potentially reducing leak run time. It is also unaffected by the limitations of human listening so no leaks are missed.

We’ve been using FIDO AI on behalf of our clients to accurately detect leaks and prioritize them by size for years. We have listened to these leakage and NRW experts to develop FIDO Smart. FIDO Smart puts this AI power in the hands of individual engineers themselves so they can deliver verified outcomes at any stage of the NRW reduction process. Early feedback suggests that users love it,” said Victoria.

The FIDO Smart system includes a smartphone app, multi-function FIDO sensors, optional telemetry devices and access to FIDO AI in the cloud.

About FIDO Tech: FIDO is a UK-based global technology company using deep learning from its vast curated water data sets to rapidly improve global water management and community water resilience at scale. Its AI is the only technology which can find leaks and other water events occurring on any pipeline network in real time and rank them by size for effective prioritization. Its results are verified using volumetric water benefit accounting, a global water stewardship standard, and it is now used in five continents, with offices in the UK and the US.
