Introducing a newly published scientific review of condition monitoring techniques for water pipelines.
Monitoring the condition of water distribution networks is vital for effective maintenance and investment planning. But it’s hard to do. Fortunately, innovative techniques are emerging in the field. FIDO AI has been named among them in a new research paper just published in the scientific journal Measurement.
Dr Jawwad Latif explains the reasoning behind the research.
About the research
The review article provides a comprehensive and impartial overview of current and emerging technologies over the last few decades.
New terms are introduced to better explain and characterise the technologies. The peer-reviewed paper also considers how these might develop in the future.
The authors’ intention was to provide an evidenced contribution to further existing knowledge. The review will also act as a resource for the scientific research community.
Review on condition monitoring techniques for water pipelines
Abstract
Condition monitoring in water distribution networks and sewerage pipelines is one of the primary concerns for water utility companies.
The impact of complex interconnected parameters on pipe , lengthy water transmission networks and resource utilisation make maintenance procedures even more challenging.
Various condition monitoring techniques for underground water pipes are in practice by water utility companies. High resolution cameras, electromagnetic waves, laser radiation, ultrasonic waves, acoustic sensors, eddy current and thermal profiling methods are used for condition assessment.
However, these technologies also have limitations depending on pipe material, the size of the pipe, types of defects, environmental factors, the size of the pipeline network, water pressure and flow rates.
The current review includes a wide range of condition monitoring techniques for water pipelines and also highlights key features and limitations of emerging techniques.
